Idemitsu, Showa Shell to merge with 1.1 mil b/d refining capacity
Japanese refiners Idemitsu Kosan and Showa Shell are set to merge in April 2019 in a deal that could create Asia's leading refiner with a combined refining capacity of 1.1 million b/d.
"We will be in an era of competing in Asia, and how we can survive by making our refineries strong in the coming years," Showa Shell CEO Tsuyoshi Kameoka said Tuesday at a joint press conference in Tokyo. "In this context, Showa Shell's four group refineries and Idemitsu Kosan's three refineries are already among the most competitive refinery complexes in Asia," said Kameoka, adding that the two companies do not plan to scrap or consolidate their seven refineries after the planned merger.
The merged entity would have a combined refining capacity of 1.058 million b/d across seven refineries in Japan; Idemitsu Kosan's three refineries with a combined 500,000 b/d capacity and Showa Shell's four group refineries with a combined capacity of 558,000 b/d, including the 143,000 b/d Sodegaura refinery operated by Fuji Oil in which Showa Shell has a 6.57% stake.
