BP's approval for a $1.3 billion expansion at the Atlantis field in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico confirms the emergence of a deepwater theme, UBS analysts say. The investment bank says investors had been left contemplating the future of deepwater oil and gas after prices collapsed in 2014, but technological advances and cheaper drilling have changed perceptions of deepwater projects. UBS notes that while standalone deepwater projects remain economically challenging, tie-backs to existing platforms--such as the Atlantis expansion--are short cycle and high returning. Such activity will become a major theme for other oil majors too, UBS says.
