Bulgaria establishes subsidiary for creation of liquid Balkan gas hub
Bulgaria's state-owned Bulgartransgaz has established a subsidiary company to develop a Bulgaria-based gas hub designed to increase trading liquidity in the country and wider southeast European region.
Bulgaria and the European Commission have been pushing for a southeast European physical gas hub to be created in the Bulgarian city of Varna for several years, though progress has been slow.
The creation of a Balkan gas hub was part of the Bulgarian government's approved 2020 energy strategy.
"Bulgartransgaz has registered a subsidiary, Balkan Gas Hub AD, which will contribute to the realization of the concept for a Balkan gas distribution hub," the company said in a statement.
Southeast Europe remains poorly interconnected, with a number of countries in the region dependent on gas imports from Russia, but new infrastructure projects such as the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria will provide new supply alternatives.
Bulgartransgaz said the company would provide market participants in Bulgaria and the wider southeast European region with the "opportunity to use a trading platform with all the necessary functionalities."
