OPEC May Extend Oil Output Cuts to Year-End
Following the production cuts by OPEC and its allies that have boosted oil prices this year, the cartel will likely "use more firepower by extending the cuts till the end of the year," says Mamdouh G. Salameh, a professor of energy economics at ESCP Europe. That will happen as Saudi Arabia is keen to push oil prices above $80/barrel to balance its budget, he says. The current production cut agreement of 1.2 million barrels/day is due to expire in June. Its members are meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan this weekend to review adherence to the cuts and discuss next steps.
