UK Enfield gas plant upgrade set for 2020
Uniper's 408 MW, two-unit Enfield gas plant in London is to be upgraded in 2020, adding up to 55 MW per unit and taking efficiency over 60% (higher heating value), the German utility said Monday.
he 2002-commissioned plant has one 280 MW GT 26 unit and one 150 MW steam turbine installed by Alstom. GE, which acquired Alstom's power and grid business in 2015, has been contracted by Uniper to carry out the upgrade, with Enfield the first site to install GE's new GT26 HE gas turbine.
The benefits would enable Enfield "to consistently elevate its position on the dispatch curve" in the UK power market and ramp up operating hours, GE said.
The upgrade would increase baseload plant efficiency by two percentage points to 60%-plus, the vendor said.Cooling needs would fall by 15%, lowering relative emissions of CO2.
Uniper is the UK's fifth-largest generator with seven power stations totalling over 6 GW as well as the Holford gas storage site.
In December 2016 Uniper selected GE to provide upgrades to "future proof" its Enfield and Grain (1,200 MW) combined cycle gas plants, extending maintenance periods by up to 33%.
