Canada crude-by-rail exports seen recovering in near term: TPH

Canadian crude shipments by rail are ready to recover after struggling amid heavy crude differentials considered too expensive for train exports, Tudor, Pickering, Holt said Tuesday.

"With ample onloading capacity available, ample barrels still purportedly in storage, refining utilization ramping up, and a dearth of heavy sours available for the North American market, the setup is there for crude-by-rail volumes to continue to pick up in the coming weeks," energy-focused TPH said in a research note.

Canada's crude-by-rail exports rose to a record high 353,789 b/d in December before dipping in January, according to the latest statistics from the National Energy Board. The January decline came after the Alberta government limited production, causing differentials to spike.

TPH said an analysis of public data from Canada's two major rail operators showed weekly carloads for last week at the highest level since late January. Crude carloads for the two carriers rose to 10,600 carloads last week, it said.
